ABOUT KILIMANJARO’S MACHAME ROUTE

This six or seven-day camping route provides an ideal balance of stunning vistas, a reasonable level of challenge, and ample time for acclimatization. Its popularity is evident, with approximately 35% of all climbers on Kilimanjaro opting for this trail, according to statistics from Kilimanjaro National Park. Dubbed the “Whiskey Route” due to its perceived difficulty compared to the Marangu route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, Machame offers a distinctive experience. Unlike Marangu, where hikers stay in huts, Machame allows for camping throughout the journey, meaning trekkers will sleep in tents until reaching the summit. Traversing the Machame Route rewards trekkers with encounters with renowned landmarks on Mount Kilimanjaro, such as the illustrious Lava Tower and the awe-inspiring Shira Plateau. The path meanders through valleys and ridges, adding a touch of strenuousness to the hike but offering hikers some of the most captivating views on the entire mountain.

It is widely acknowledged that the Machame route is the most visually stunning among all the routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, presenting a plethora of unique and diverse landscapes to traverse each day. Starting on the mountain’s south side, the trail passes beneath the Southern Ice Field and approaches the summit from the Barafu Camp. For travellers with extra days at their disposal, the Machame route proves to be an excellent choice. Allowing for one or two additional days of acclimatization significantly improves the chances of reaching the summit. Despite its increased challenge in comparison to the Marangu route, climbers who opt for Machame often achieve a higher success rate. Among the route’s notable challenges, the Barranco Wall stands out as one of the most formidable and intimidating. At first glance, the cliff face can be quite daunting. However, the Barranco Wall is not as frightening or difficult as it initially appears. Careful foot placement and occasionally utilizing handholds for extra support may be necessary, but the climb usually takes around an hour to an hour and a half to complete. The view from the top of the wall makes the effort entirely worthwhile, offering a rewarding vista to behold.

Experience Expectation

Embarking on a 6-day Machame Route itinerary to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, climbers can anticipate a thrilling and awe-inspiring adventure amidst the grandeur of nature’s masterpiece. With each passing day, the ascent unveils a tapestry of breathtaking landscapes, from lush rainforests to moorlands adorned with vibrant flora. As climbers steadily gain altitude, they are immersed in the ethereal beauty of the Shira Plateau, where the vastness of the sky merges with the sprawling plains below.

This journey challenges both physical and mental stamina, rewarding climbers with unforgettable panoramas, including the imposing Barranco Wall and the lunar-like terrain of the Karanga Valley. The summit day, steeped in anticipation and excitement, culminates with a victorious arrival at Uhuru Peak, the pinnacle of Africa. Throughout this exhilarating experience, climbers forge bonds with their fellow adventurers and witness the indomitable spirit of the human will.

The trail is steep and demanding, and the high altitude presents its own set of challenges. However, with determination and the support of our experienced guides, we will conquer the summit.

Standing at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa is an indescribable experience and a moment to cherish. After celebrating our achievement, we will begin our descent back to Barafu Camp. Here, we will take a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp, situated at 10,000 feet. The descent can be tiring but is filled with a sense of accomplishment. We will spend the night at Mweka Camp, savouring the memories of our incredible journey.

Shorts and T-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to the hotel in Moshi.
