ABOUT KILIMANJARO’S MACHAME ROUTE
This six or seven-day camping route provides an ideal balance of stunning vistas, a reasonable level of challenge, and ample time for acclimatization. Its popularity is evident, with approximately 35% of all climbers on Kilimanjaro opting for this trail, according to statistics from Kilimanjaro National Park. Dubbed the “Whiskey Route” due to its perceived difficulty compared to the Marangu route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route, Machame offers a distinctive experience. Unlike Marangu, where hikers stay in huts, Machame allows for camping throughout the journey, meaning trekkers will sleep in tents until reaching the summit. Traversing the Machame Route rewards trekkers with encounters with renowned landmarks on Mount Kilimanjaro, such as the illustrious Lava Tower and the awe-inspiring Shira Plateau. The path meanders through valleys and ridges, adding a touch of strenuousness to the hike but offering hikers some of the most captivating views on the entire mountain.
It is widely acknowledged that the Machame route is the most visually stunning among all the routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, presenting a plethora of unique and diverse landscapes to traverse each day. Starting on the mountain’s south side, the trail passes beneath the Southern Ice Field and approaches the summit from the Barafu Camp. For travellers with extra days at their disposal, the Machame route proves to be an excellent choice. Allowing for one or two additional days of acclimatization significantly improves the chances of reaching the summit. Despite its increased challenge in comparison to the Marangu route, climbers who opt for Machame often achieve a higher success rate. Among the route’s notable challenges, the Barranco Wall stands out as one of the most formidable and intimidating. At first glance, the cliff face can be quite daunting. However, the Barranco Wall is not as frightening or difficult as it initially appears. Careful foot placement and occasionally utilizing handholds for extra support may be necessary, but the climb usually takes around an hour to an hour and a half to complete. The view from the top of the wall makes the effort entirely worthwhile, offering a rewarding vista to behold.
When embarking on a 7-day Machame Route itinerary to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro, climbers can expect a truly awe-inspiring adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes and a sense of accomplishment like no other. The Machame Route, known for its scenic beauty and diverse terrain, offers an immersive experience for those seeking to summit Africa’s highest peak. Over the course of the journey, climbers will navigate through lush rainforests, traverse rocky ridges, and traverse snow-covered slopes, all while being surrounded by the stunning vistas of Kilimanjaro.
With the guidance of experienced guides and porters, climbers can look forward to a well-structured itinerary that allows for proper acclimatization, enhancing their chances of reaching the summit. Each day brings new challenges and rewards, fostering a sense of camaraderie among fellow climbers and creating memories that will last a lifetime. As the days unfold, climbers will witness the ever-changing landscapes and push their physical and mental limits, knowing that the ultimate reward awaits them at Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the Machame Gate, where you will complete the necessary park formalities and meet the rest of your trekking crew. The trek starts through the lush rainforest, where you might spot various species of monkeys and colourful birds. The trail winds up through the dense vegetation, providing beautiful views of the surrounding flora. By late afternoon, you will reach Machame Camp, nestled on the edge of the forest. Rest, enjoy a delicious dinner, and prepare for the next day’s adventure.
After breakfast, you will continue your ascent, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the moorland zone. The trail gradually steepens, offering impressive views of the surrounding valleys and Mount Meru in the distance. As you reach Shira Camp, you will be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Shira Plateau. Take some time to acclimatize, relax, and enjoy the magnificent sunset over the vast landscape. Overnight at Shira Camp.
Today’s trek takes you across the Shira Plateau, gradually ascending to the Lava Tower at 15,000 feet. This is a crucial acclimatization point that aids your body in adjusting to the altitude. You will then descend to Barranco Camp, nestled in a picturesque valley. Along the way, you will pass through the stunning Senecio forest and admire the unique flora of the alpine desert. The Barranco Campsite offers breathtaking views of the Barranco Wall, a highlight of the following day’s climb. Rest and rejuvenate for the challenges ahead.
Today’s adventure begins with a thrilling scramble up the Barranco Wall. This section requires some basic climbing skills but is perfectly safe with the assistance of your experienced guides. Once you conquer the wall, the trail levels out and you will hike across the glacial valleys of Karanga. Enjoy the mesmerizing views of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers as you approach the Karanga Camp. Take the rest of the day to relax, hydrate, and prepare for the final push to the summit.
Today’s trek is shorter but steeper as you make your way to Barafu Camp, your last campsite before the summit. The trail offers spectacular views of the glaciers and the expansive plains below. Once you reach Barafu Camp, you will have an early dinner and rest for a few hours before starting the summit attempt. Your guide will brief you on the upcoming ascent and ensure you are adequately equipped for the challenging climb ahead.
At midnight, you will wake up for a hot beverage and a light snack before embarking on the final ascent. The trek to Uhuru Peak is challenging, both physically and mentally, but the breathtaking sunrise and the sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile. As you reach the summit, celebrate your achievement, and savour the panoramic views stretching across the African plains. After capturing unforgettable memories, you will descend to Mweka Camp, passing through the alpine desert and the rainforest. The descent is long but relatively easier on your body. At Mweka Camp, enjoy a well-deserved dinner and a good night’s sleep.
After breakfast, begin the final leg of your journey as you descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The lower elevations can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles will be helpful. Once you reach the gate, you will receive your well-deserved summit certificates. From there, it’s a one-hour hike to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi. Take this time to reflect on your incredible adventure and celebrate your accomplishment.
