Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Break out of the trees and step onto the striking Shira Plateau. The trail gets steeper and rockier as you navigate the moorland, rewarding you with vast, open views of the skies and the peak ahead.

Enjoy a hot basin of water delivered to your tent for washing up before relaxing in a foldable camp chair to watch the spectacular high-altitude sunset.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is your crucial 'climb high, sleep low' day. You will hike up into the alpine desert to the towering volcanic rock known as Lava Tower for lunch, before descending into the lush Barranco Valley.

Camp in a dramatic valley surrounded by ancient, towering Senecio trees. Gather in the dining tent for a hot, restorative soup and a hearty meal.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start the day by scrambling up the famous Barranco Wall—it looks intimidating but is incredibly fun! You will then take a short, scenic hike to Karanga Camp. This extra day of rest is the secret to this route's high success rate.

Arrive at camp early, giving you the entire afternoon to sleep on your thick mattress, rehydrate, and let your body adapt to the altitude.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A steady, rocky climb brings you to Barafu Camp, your final launchpad to the summit. The air here is thin and the landscape is a stark alpine desert. You will eat an early dinner and get to sleep while the sun is still up.

This exposed, rocky camp is strictly for resting. Your crew will ensure you have plenty of hot tea and carbs before you bundle up in your tent.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
At midnight, you will begin the ultimate push. Guided by headlamps, you will conquer the steep scree slopes to reach Uhuru Peak as the sun rises. After celebrating on the Roof of Africa, you will descend far down the mountain to Mweka Camp.

Back in the thicker air of the tree line, you will enjoy a massive celebratory dinner and the deepest sleep of your life in your warm tent.

Your final morning on the mountain is a joyous one. After a farewell song from your porters, you will hike down through the rainforest to the gate, collect your certificate, and head back to town.
