The Rongai Route offers a completely different Kilimanjaro experience. As the only trail approaching from the north near the Kenyan border, it is much drier and significantly less crowded than the southern routes. This makes it an excellent choice for climbing during the rainy season or for those who simply want a quiet, remote wilderness experience. You will ascend through pine forests and alpine deserts, enjoying unique views of the Mawenzi peak.

Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp
After a long drive to the northern side of the mountain, you will begin a gentle hike through lush farmlands and beautiful pine forests, offering a great chance to spot local wildlife.

Your 4-season tent will be set up in a quiet forest clearing. Enjoy your first hot camp dinner prepared by our expert chefs.

Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp
You will ascend steadily out of the forest and into the moorland. The trail offers increasingly expansive views of the Kenyan plains behind you and the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks ahead.

Settle into your tent on the rugged moorland. Refresh with hot water provided by the crew before relaxing in the dining tent.

Kikilewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Today is a shorter but steeper climb that takes you right to the base of the dramatic, jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. The landscape here is stunningly remote and peaceful.

The Property
Camp beside a beautiful alpine tarn (lake) beneath the towering peaks. Relax on your thick sleeping mat and let your body acclimatize.

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut Camp
You will cross the desolate, lunar-like landscape of 'The Saddle' that connects Mawenzi to Kibo. The stark beauty of the alpine desert is awe-inspiring as you approach base camp.

The Property
You will rest at the rocky high-altitude base camp. Eat an early, carb-heavy dinner and get some sleep before your midnight climb.

Uhuru Peak to Horombo Camp
Beginning in the freezing darkness, you will push up the steep scree to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After celebrating your massive success, you will descend via the Marangu route to Horombo.

Enjoy a celebratory dinner with your crew before collapsing into a deep, well-earned sleep in the thicker mountain air.

Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate
A beautiful final descent through the moorland and rainforest brings you to the exit gate. Receive your certificate and transfer back to Arusha.
