Umbwe Route Itinerary
The Umbwe Route offers itineraries ranging from 5 to 6 days. While the 5-day trek is the fastest option, the 6-day itinerary is highly recommended for better acclimatization and a safer climb.
Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel. Unwind, review your gear, and attend a detailed briefing to prepare for the climb.
Day 2: Trekking from Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
- Time: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 11 km
- Altitude: 1,640 meters (Umbwe Gate) to 2,850 meters (Umbwe Camp)
Your trek begins at the Umbwe Gate, where you’ll register and start ascending through a dense rainforest. The trail is steep, narrow, and direct, offering glimpses of the mountain and a truly immersive experience in nature. Arrive at Umbwe Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Day 3: Trekking from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

- Altitude: 2,850 meters (Umbwe Camp) to 3,950 meters (Barranco Camp)
The climb continues through mossy forests before transitioning into the open moorlands. As you ascend, breathtaking views of the Western Breach and Barranco Valley emerge. Arrive at Barranco Camp, situated under the towering Barranco Wall
Day 4: Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 5 km
- Altitude: 3,950 meters (Barranco Camp) to 4,035 meters (Karanga Camp)
Today’s trek begins with the iconic Barranco Wall. Though steep and challenging, it’s a thrilling climb with stunning panoramic views. The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley before ascending to Karanga Camp for overnight rest and acclimatization.
Day 5: Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 4 km
- Altitude: 4,035 meters (Karanga Camp) to 4,673 meters (Barafu Camp)
The trek to Barafu Camp is short but steep, passing through a barren alpine desert. Upon arrival, you’ll prepare for your summit attempt, which begins around midnight. Rest and hydrate as you ready yourself for the climb to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6: Ascent to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

- Distance: 5 km (Ascent), 13 km (Descent)
- Altitude: 4,673 meters (Barafu Camp) to 5,895 meters (Uhuru Peak) to 3,820 meters (Millennium Camp)
Begin your summit push under the cover of darkness, climbing slowly to Stella Point (5,739 meters) and continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). Witness the spectacular sunrise from Africa’s highest point before descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then onward to Millennium Camp.
Day 7: Descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate
- Time: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 13 km
- Altitude: 3,820 meters (Millennium Camp) to 1,640 meters (Mweka Gate)
The final day of your trek takes you through lush rainforest as you descend to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificate and bid farewell to your mountain team. Transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved celebration.
Day 8: Departure

Hotel Before and After the Hike
The night before the climb and the night following the descent, you will be accommodated in a 3* hotel in the area of Arusha Town. By default – shared double occupancy room unless you order a single supplement. Should the Hotel be unavailable, you will be offered an alternative property with the matching comfort and service level. In your hotel, you will find everything a traveller needs: professional staff, a restaurant, a swimming pool, comfortable rooms with mosquito nets, laundry service, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Single Supplement
Our group expeditions are designed to foster camaraderie among travellers, with shared accommodations that create a strong sense of community. Portable Toilet
The tour package does not include portable toilets to keep expenses efficient. Public restrooms are available at various camps. Due to Kilimanjaro National Park regulations, portable toilets are not allowed on the Marangu route.
